Recently, I had the opportunity to tie on a bar towel, emerging from my long-standing retirement from tending bar. I had so much fun that I’m actually considering doing this again from time to time. There are people out there, though, that do this for a living — working four to five nights every week. It’s hard work!
More often than not, people in this industry are in it temporarily, moving on to other She’ll tease you like you were her little brother… that’s how you know you’re welcome.careers once they’ve completed school or gotten a speaking part on a soap. But there are exceptions out there — people who are in it for the long haul, taking pride in their work — and I’d like to tell you about one in particular.
Her name is Stacey. She’s been bartending at the 35er in Old Town Pasadena, California, for almost seven years. Needless to say, I couldn’t picture her in any other profession because she’s so good at this one. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. Spectators? There are plenty! When this girl gets busy, something kicks in — like a well tuned machine. Serving drinks is only a small part of it — she has a very animated personality coupled with a sincere appreciation for the ridiculous (an essential in this business). No one cries in their beer on her shift, I assure you
An important aspect of tending bar is being able to make people feel welcome. Stacey has her own special way of doing that. She’ll never be accused of being a coddler. If you’re looking for someone to hold your hand, this is not the place. Her approach is unique — she’ll tell you like it is. She’ll tease you like you were her little brother……that’s how you know you’re welcome. But she doesn’t take any grief from anyone — a delicate flower, she is not. She is truly the definitive Badass Chick!
When asked why she decided on bartending as a career, her response was, “I was a very inquisitive cocktail waitress so when a position opened up behind the bar, they offered it to me. It wasn’t until I realized that I was actually pretty good at it that I decided to make a career out of tending bar.” The rest is history. In the future, Stacey hopes to go from bartender to bar owner.
If you’d like to look in on Stacey yourself, the 35er has web cams that broadcast 24 hours a day. She works Wednesday through Saturday Nights. She’s the tall blonde. And if you find yourself in Old Town Pasadena, California, drop in at the 35er during her shift and mention that I sent you. You can bet that your drink will be a good one. And make sure you bring your sense of humor — you’ll need it!
